The Portage Northern High School Library Learning Commons is hopping every day from 7:00 AM when the doors open to the end of the day. With a population of 1350 students, it is an active learning environment. As part of a recent bond issue, the Library Learning Commons was remodeled to fully envision the goal of delivering 21st Century skills to students and teachers. With a media classroom and 3 classroom areas in the Library Learning Commons, all equipped with a Technology Enhanced Classroom model, the Library Learning Commons is overflowing with teaching and learning, averaging 4500 students per week.

The Portage Northern High School library teaching program was recognized by being selected as the library media program to represent Michigan on Dr. Nancy Everhart’s AASL Vision Tour.

Jeanna’s role as a collaborator encompasses being a teacher, a learner, a coach, a counselor, an encourager and a listener. She firmly believes that what all library media specialists do in their Library Media Centers has a direct impact on what is happening in the classroom. Her ultimate goal is that the students will be able to learn on their own. She strives to develop learning experiences in partnership with classroom teachers that will be authentic and engage learning. From teaching the 21st Century Literacies to making sure the reading is a Window to their World, those are the things that make the program successful.

Jeanna is on the Executive Board of MAME (Michigan Association for Media in Education), currently serving as secretary. She is also on the State of Michigan School Library Advisory Team, a group whose charge it is to update the School Library 21 Standards, a tool for evaluating the effectiveness of school library programs in Michigan.

She is also K-12 Department Chair, Instructional Media and Technology, for Portage Public Schools. As part of that role, she is leading the department in the alignment of the K-12 Library Media Curriculum to the ELA Common Core State Standards. Jeanna also teaches technology integration to teachers in after school and summer programs.

Jeanna published an article, “They Said Yes” in Kristin Fontichiaro and Buffy Hamilton's (Editors) School Libraries: What's Now, What's Next, What's Yet to Come.  An article was written about Jeanna in the same publication, “Jeanna the Queena” by Caitlin Stansell.

Jeanna Walker was recently named by the Michigan Association for Media in Education (MAME) as Michigan's 2014 School Librarian of the Year.
